Quick Layout

Hold Hyper, choose a region, and release Hyper to place the focused window.

Quick Layout needs Accessibility permission and Enable Layouts in Settings → Layout. It also works in limited mode, with fewer splits available for each placement.

Place a window

Focus the window you want to move.
Hold Hyper by itself.
Press an arrow key to choose a region.
Release Hyper to place the window in the highlighted area.

The preview appears after the delay set in Layout settings, but the controls work immediately.

You can also switch and place in one motion. Keep Hyper held after pressing an app shortcut, then use the layout controls. The preview delay restarts when you release the app key, so a quick switch stays unobtrusive while a continued hold becomes Quick Layout.

Resize a window or Workspace

Hold Hyper and press Minus to make the current window one step smaller. Press the physical Equals/Plus key to make it one step larger; it works with or without Shift. Press Zero to center the window in the usable display area.

These controls act immediately, even before the preview appears. While the preview is visible and before you press an arrow, Minus and Equals/Plus update the highlighted window frame; release Hyper to apply it. Opposite resize steps undo each other, and you can grow a window beyond the size where the gesture began.

Resize steps follow an invisible grid inside the display area after applying your layout gap. Set Resize grid to Coarse (8 × 8), Standard (16 × 16, the default), or Fine (24 × 24). A finer grid makes each step smaller.

If the focused window belongs to an active Workspace with another member, these keys operate on the Workspace instead. Minus and Equals/Plus resize the deepest row or column around that member’s slot, while Zero equalizes it. The keys keep this Workspace behavior before and after the preview appears. HyperSwitcher applies quick repeated presses in order.

Use Window edge behavior in Settings → Layout to choose how touching the usable layout edges affects these steps:

Ignore edges (the default) changes the window’s width and height around its center.
Resize both dimensions changes width and height while keeping a one-sided edge or corner attachment pinned.
Adapt to edges changes only the dimension that keeps a side-attached window pinned; corner windows change both dimensions. A window filling the usable area changes both around its center.

This choice belongs to the active profile. HyperSwitcher captures it when you begin holding Hyper, so a change made during a hold takes effect the next time you hold Hyper.

Placement animation

By default, HyperSwitcher animates Quick Layout placement, centering, resizing, showing a Workspace, and resizing an active Workspace. Workspace members share one animation so their movement stays synchronized. Workspace assignment edits, Workspace display moves, and Tidy Up still apply immediately.

Use Animate window placement in Settings → Layout to turn the effect on or off. It and Animation duration are in the card directly below Quick Layout. The duration ranges from 100 to 500 ms and defaults to 200 ms. Both settings belong to the active profile.

When Reduce Motion is enabled in macOS, HyperSwitcher skips the animation automatically.

Build a region with the arrow keys

The first arrow splits the display in half and selects that side. Press an arrow that points into the selected region to split it again. Press one that points away to move to a neighboring region.

For example, Left, then Up selects the upper-left quarter. Quick Layout supports up to eight regions; limited mode allows one horizontal and one vertical split.

Hold the Layout action key while pressing arrows to combine neighboring regions. Release it when the combined area is the size you want.

The Layout action key is Shift by default. When the second shortcut layer is available, physical Left Shift belongs to that layer, so Quick Layout uses physical Right Shift and labels the combination Right Shift + Arrows. Left Shift or both Shift keys do not trigger the layout action in this mode; release both before trying again.

Without the second layer, either physical Shift key works. You can also record another supported key in Settings → Layout. The choice belongs to the active profile and also controls maximize and restore.

Resize or equalize a selected region

For a window outside an active Workspace, wait for the Quick Layout preview, then press an arrow to begin selecting regions. Minus makes the selected region one grid unit smaller, while the physical Equals/Plus key makes it one unit larger. The neighboring region gives up or receives that unit, so the full layout still fills the display. Press Zero to return that local row or column to equal proportions.

In a nested layout, HyperSwitcher adjusts the deepest row or column that contains the whole selection. Pressing Space carries these proportions into a new Workspace. An arrow pressed before the preview appears still places the window immediately with the ordinary equal split.

Once the preview is visible, an unused app key can also create a temporary shortcut for the focused app or window.

Maximize, restore, and move between displays

Hold the Layout action key before any arrow to maximize the focused window. Repeat the gesture to restore the frame HyperSwitcher remembered for it. The remembered frame is cleared if the window closes or moves into another layout.

For an active Workspace member, maximize acts as a temporary zoom. The window keeps its Workspace assignment, and repeating the gesture restores the frame currently assigned to its slot.

Press Tab before choosing a region to move the window to the next display without resizing it. After a region is selected, Tab moves the preview there instead. If a window cannot fit in the chosen region, select a larger one.

Other successful Quick Layout moves remove a Workspace member from that Workspace and leave its slot empty. Resizing or equalizing it with Minus, Equals/Plus, or Zero adjusts the Workspace instead and keeps the assignment. Opening or cancelling Quick Layout without moving the window also keeps the assignment.

Use Settings → Layout to change the Layout action key, preview style, resize grid, window edge behavior, gaps, hold delay, placement animation, Vim keys, and Workspace behavior. These choices belong to the active profile; the settings reference lists them all.

To maximize, restore, center, resize, place, or cycle the focused window from Shortcuts, Stream Deck, Terminal, or a script, create the equivalent action in Settings → Automation.
